Jewish Family Service Programs Jewish Family Service provides a wide variety of social services to the area’s Jewish Community. Our licensed and accredited agency offers the following comprehensive programs. To get more information on our services or to register for our groups, call JFS at 366-5438 or look us up on the web at www.jfsct.org. Counseling - There are times in all of our lives when we feel overwhelmed, saddened or just not ourselves. Jewish Family Service’s caring and professional staff are here to help you and your family get through these times. Individual, family, child and group therapy is available. Adoption - Jewish Family Service has already helped hundreds of Connecticut families make their adoption dreams become realities. Children are available both domestically and internationally. Services to Senior Citizens - Our goal is to help seniors remain living both independently and with dignity in their own homes. Services offered to accomplish this are: case management, counseling, transportation, hot kosher meals, friendly visitors, volunteers, support groups and a program for caregivers. Resettlement - As the Jewish community’s resettlement agency, we ensure all services are available to new refugees. These include concrete services such as food, clothing and shelter as well as English language, Jewish identity building, volunteer friendship and vocational services and job placement. Jewish Family Life Education - As the preventative arm of the agency, we offer workshops on topics of normal concern to all of us. Examples are “issues of aging” and “communication with your teenager”. Assistance- We provide financial aid and coordinate the distribution of food, gifts and assistance for the holidays. Information and Referral - whether new to the area or have a problem requiring assistance, call us at 366-5438. Holocaust Survivors Program- provides financial aid and emotional support to Holocaust survivors and their families. Volunteer Services - Volunteers act as our “eyes and ears” in the community. They are friendly visitors to seniors, medical drivers, friends to refugees, big buddies to children, respite care providers, office helpers and members of the Board of Directors and committees. Volunteer Respite Care Providers - Volunteers are presently being recruited and trained to provide respite for caregivers of the elderly. We all know how time consuming it is to care for an elderly relative. This program will train volunteers to give caregivers some relief. Parenting Program - is a year long educational series developed by JFS and Pediatric Healthcare Associates that meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at the JCCS providing information on physical, social and psychological development of children. Russian Senior Citizens Program - Consultation, language, paperwork problems and barriers, friendly visitors, preparing for US citizenship and other personalized services are provided for the Russian community. Caregivers Support Group - Meets twice a month to provide information, referral, counseling and support for caregivers of the elderly. Topics include “decreasing stress and guilt”, “long term planning”, and best ways to cope as a caregiver especially with a loved one suffering from dementia. Geriatric Care Management Program - specializing in assisting families and caregivers with counseling, consultation and personalized services to insure the best care and circumstances for the loved one. Whether local or at a distance, the goal is to assist in maintaining the older adult at the maximum level of independence. Chaplain Service – provided by the Rabbi for unaffiliated elders and a Healing Center for all. Rabbi is available to visit unaffiliated elderly in nursing homes, hospitals and assisted living residences. Also provides support on healing and bereavement issues.
